Getting started is very straightforward. Open Recall, sign in, and go to the area for apps and extensions. From there, install the browser extension for Chrome, Safari, or Firefox. You can also use the iOS or Android app if you prefer to save material from your phone.
Once it is installed, I strongly recommend pinning the Recall extension to your browser toolbar. That tiny step makes a big difference because saving something becomes frictionless. Find a useful video, article, or PDF, click Recall, and it is captured.
The general workflow looks like this:
- Open a piece of content you want to keep.
- Click the Recall browser extension.
- Allow Recall to process and save the source.

You can use a concise summary when you need the key points quickly, or a detailed summary when you want more context. The detailed version can include timestamps, which is huge when you want to confirm where a claim was made or jump directly to a specific part of a long video.
You can also ask direct questions such as:

- When did they discuss Airtable?
- What were the key strategic takeaways?
- What evidence supports this point?
Recall returns an answer from the saved source and can point you to the relevant placement in the material. Instead of scrubbing through an hour-long episode trying to find one sentence, you can go straight to the useful part.
The same approach works beyond video. For an article about the federal funds rate, for example, you can ask Recall to explain it at a beginner level. You can even use a prompt like โexplain this like I am three years oldโ and get a much simpler explanation, then save that explanation into a notebook.
There is also a text-to-speech option for listening to saved content. Settings allow you to adjust language, voice, and even add a custom voice. It is a nice option when you want to revisit research away from the screen.
Use case 1: turning long content into something usable
I love long-form podcasts, but I do not always have 75 minutes available for every episode. The All-In Podcast is a perfect example. It can be full of useful discussion, but it is also long, and I have channels to run, work to do, and a family to prioritize.
Rather than skipping it completely, I save it in Recall and generate a concise summary. Within moments, I have the key sections and important takeaways without losing the overall context.
Then I can move from consuming content to actually using it.
For example, after saving a podcast covering AI competition, I can ask how the discussion might affect ChatGPT, Anthropic, or Claude. Recall can use the source and, if I enable it, web information as well. The output can surface themes such as:

Once those takeaways are in my notebook, I can turn them into content ideas. I might ask for three short video concepts, each with a title, hook, script, description, and relevant social tags. The important thing is that the ideas are grounded in research I have already saved, not generated from thin air.
This is how I turn a long podcast or video into useful building blocks for scripts, posts, research briefs, and future ideas. The time savings are obvious, but the bigger win is that valuable information does not disappear after I finish consuming it.
Save your thinking, not just the source
Recall is more useful when you add your own notes alongside the content. If I am reading something about interest rates, I might note that I want to monitor changes and understand how they could affect my portfolio.
Those notes sync with the web app and are fully editable. You can format them, create headings, build journals, and keep your own interpretation next to the original source. That turns a collection of links into a more personal research system.
Use case 2: chatting across your entire knowledge base
The global chat is probably the most underrated feature. Instead of chatting with one video or one article at a time, you can ask questions across everything you have saved.
You can choose where answers come from:
- Recall only: Answers use your saved sources.
- Web only: Answers use web information.
- Recall plus web: Answers combine your knowledge base with the broader web.
You can also narrow the context to specific tags, sources, or uploaded materials. That gives you much more control over the type of answer you get.
For example, I can ask: โBased on every video, PDF, and article I have saved about TikTok growth, what five strategies show up consistently?โ Recall can search across relevant saved cards, including articles and videos, then identify patterns across the collection.
That is much better than manually reopening ten tabs and hoping I remember what each one said.
An even more valuable question is: โWhat are articles discussing that the videos are not talking about?โ That lets me find gaps between formats and sources. For content creation, this is incredibly powerful. You want to cover topics people care about, but you do not want to repeat the exact same talking points everyone else is using.
From there, I can ask what knowledge gaps remain elsewhere on the internet that may be valuable to cover. Now I have:
- The themes that overlap across my research.
- The ideas some sources cover while others miss.
- Potential gaps worth researching further.
Recall also provides source references, so I can understand where the information came from. That is a major part of making AI useful. Personal context should make answers more relevant, but you still need a way to trace the reasoning back to the saved material.
You can switch models based on the task as well. Maybe you prefer one model for research, another for writing, and another for scripts. On the Max plan, you can even change the model and ask the same question again to compare answers.
You can create personas too. A โResearch Assistantโ persona could have instructions for tone, expertise, and answer format. Or you could build a writing assistant that follows your own style and preferences. That makes the system feel much more tailored to how you work.
Use case 3: connecting Recall to Claude with MCP
Recall also has an MCP server, which makes it possible to connect your personal knowledge base directly to AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT.
MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is what allows an assistant to access a connected tool or knowledge source. In this case, it means Claude can use your Recall library as part of its work.
To connect Recall to Claude, copy the MCP connection information from Recall. In Claude, open Customize, go to Connectors, select Add, then choose Add Custom. Add Recallโs MCP details, confirm the connection, and complete the account verification process.
Once it is connected, you can use Claude with both your existing workflows and your saved research.
For example, if you have a YouTube script skill or prompt format set up in Claude, you can ask it to pull everything in Recall related to the TikTok algorithm and write a script in your format. Claude can retrieve the relevant cards from Recall, use your saved context, and create an output based on that material.
This is a major step beyond uploading a few files into a one-off chat. Your research library becomes portable context that can travel into the AI assistant you prefer.
And you are not stuck with one model ecosystem. You can connect Recall to Claude, use it with ChatGPT, and work with other AI assistants rather than rebuilding your knowledge base every time you switch tools.
Recall vs summarizers, Obsidian, NotebookLM & Notion
Recall is not trying to be identical to every productivity or AI research tool. It stands out because it replaces several separate steps with one connected system: capture, summarize, notes, knowledge base, and chat.
Recall versus a YouTube summarizer
A standard YouTube summarizer can summarize one video. That is useful, but it is usually where the workflow ends. Recall keeps the video, organizes it, connects it with your other saved material, and makes it searchable and chat-ready later.
Recall versus Obsidian, Evernote, and web clippers
