Snapchat to Charge for Memories Storage: Here’s How to Save Your Snaps for Free

snapchat

Nearly a decade after becoming the go-to “digital time capsule” for users, Snapchat is putting a price tag on its Memories feature. The company recently announced it will cap free Memories storage at 5GB.

If you exceed that limit, you’ll need to either export your old Snaps or sign up for one of the new paid Memories Storage plans. The company is giving users 12 months of temporary storage for oversized archives to make the transition, but many users are choosing to download their photos and videos instead of paying.

Here are the details on the new paid plans and your two options for saving your Memories for free.

New Snapchat Storage Plans

If you choose to pay, your options are:

PlanMonthly CostStorage Limit
Introductory Storage Plan$1.99Up to 100GB
Snapchat+$3.99Up to 250GB
Snapchat Platinum$15.99Up to 5TB

If you are over the limit and choose not to pay, Snapchat will save your oldest Snaps but will delete your most recent ones to keep your archive within the 5GB cap.

Option 1: Export Memories to Your Device’s Camera Roll (Recommended for Selective Saving)

You can download your Memories directly to your phone’s camera roll, though this method is limited to batches of 100 at a time. This is a good way to select only the most valuable Snaps you want to keep.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open the Snapchat app and tap the “Memories” icon (the two overlapping rectangles) next to the camera button.
  2. Tap the “Select” option in the top right corner.
  3. Choose up to 100 Memories that you want to save.
  4. Tap the “Export” button at the bottom right of your screen.
  5. Select “Download” to save them directly to your phone’s camera roll.
  6. Repeat the process to download additional batches of 100.

Option 2: Download Your Full Snapchat Data (Recommended for Full Archives)

If you have thousands of Snaps and don’t want to export them 100 at a time, you can use Snapchat’s “Download My Data” tool. This method packages your entire archive into a single .zip file and emails it to you.

Here’s how to access the full archive:

  1. Open the Snapchat app and navigate to your Profile.
  2. Tap the Settings icon (gear) in the top right.
  3. Scroll down to the “My Data” option.
  4. Select the Memories, HTML Files, and JSON Files options. (You can uncheck other options like chat history or user data to make it easier to find your Memories in the final file).
  5. Tap “Next.”
  6. Select the “All Time” option for the date range.
  7. Confirm your email address and tap “Submit.”

The time it takes to receive the email with the download link will vary significantly based on the size of your stored data.
