Facebook Updates Algorithm to Give Users More Control Over Video Feeds

Meta announced on Tuesday a new Facebook algorithm update designed to showcase more Reels videos tailored to user preferences. The changes introduce new features that offer users greater control over the videos they see, utilize AI for search suggestions, and add new social friend bubbles.

Giving Users More Control

Facebook is making it easier for users to express their disinterest in certain types of video content. They can now select “Not Interested” on a Reel or flag a comment, prompting the recommendations engine to immediately adapt based on this feedback.

The “Save” feature has also been streamlined, making it simpler to collect favorite Reels and posts in a single place.

These changes may help address user complaints about undesirable content, as many users have expressed frustration with Reels that they feel are spammy, annoying, or filled with low-quality, AI-generated videos. (Meta has, notably, invested heavily in AI, recently launching a short-form video feed called “Vibes” within the Meta AI app that features only AI-generated content.)

Prioritizing New Content and Discovery

The algorithm update also aims to prioritize freshness, as the company states it will present users with 50% more Reels that were uploaded on the same day they are scrolling.

Additionally, Facebook Reels will now feature AI-powered search suggestions. These suggestions will recommend queries to help users discover more content about topics they enjoy, similar to the suggestion tags found at the bottom of TikTok videos.

Enhanced Social Connection

The update introduces new friend bubbles that appear on Reels and in the main feed. This feature, which is similar to one on Instagram, allows users to see which posts their friends have liked. Tapping on a friend’s profile picture bubble will open a private message with them, facilitating quick, contextual conversations.
