Design platform Figma has partnered with Google to significantly enhance its design software with new AI capabilities, building upon its existing AI app-building tools. This integration will leverage several Gemini models to address the “evolving needs” of product designers and their teams.
The partnership involves incorporating Gemini 2.5 Flash, Gemini 2.0, and Imagen 4 into Figma’s toolset, while maintaining its relationship with Google Cloud.
Key AI Feature Enhancements
The primary focus of this integration is boosting image editing and generation:
- Gemini 2.5 Flash will be integrated into the image generation and editing processes. This will allow Figma’s 13 million monthly active users to generate AI images directly from a text prompt and request specific changes.
- The company anticipates this will significantly speed up user workflows. Figma cited earlier tests of Gemini 2.5 Flash, where users experienced a 50% reduction in latency for the platform’s “Make Image” feature.
Broader AI Adoption Context
This collaboration is part of a wider trend where major AI developers are integrating their models into popular existing applications to secure market dominance and consumer adoption.
- This week, OpenAI announced a similar move, allowing ChatGPT users to interact with apps from various partners, including Spotify, Canva, and Zillow. Notably, Figma was also on OpenAI’s list, indicating that its deal with Google Gemini is not an exclusive one.
Google’s Enterprise Strategy
The Figma partnership was announced alongside Google’s introduction of Gemini Enterprise, an AI-powered conversational platform aimed at bringing AI to enterprise customers within their existing workflows.
- Gemini Enterprise enables users to chat with their company’s documents, data, and applications, and provides engineers with tools to build and deploy AI agents.
- Google frames this as a win for workflow efficiency, a strategic move given that while consumers are currently driving AI profits, many generative AI pilots in companies often fail.
- Google noted that 65% of Google Cloud customers are already using its AI products.
The Figma deal adds to Google’s growing list of AI partners, which now includes new additions like GAP, Gordon Foods, Klarna, Macquarie Bank, Mercedes, and Virgin Voyages, joining existing partners such as Banco BV, Deloitte, and Deutsche Telekom.
